(In 1930, philanthropist Edward S. Harkness bestowed a gif...)
In 1930, philanthropist Edward S. Harkness bestowed a gift of $5.8 million on Phillips Exeter Academy, expecting to inspire "something revolutionary" in secondary education. The gift enabled the Exeter, New Hampshire, academy to redesign pedagogy and classrooms around distinctive oval "Harkness tables" that could accommodate twelve students plus a teacher and to remake its campus into a residential community. The gift transformed education at the school, but its impact spread well beyond the classroom.

Davis Dyer was born on the 17th of September, 1948 in the United States.
Davis Dyer studied at Harvard University and received a Bachelor's and Master's degree in History and later a Doctor of Philosophy in History.
Davis Dyer started his career as a partner and group leader of Monitor, the global professional services firm. Later he served as Senior Research Associate at Harvard Business School in 1979-1982. Davis was an Assistant Professor of Management at Boston College from 1981 to 1983. He worked as an Associate Editor and Senior Research Associate at Harvard Business Review and Harvard Business School in 1983-1986.
In 1985 Davis was appointed a lecturer of American business history at Harvard University Extension School and served as a Senior Part-time Consultant at Monitor Company in 1986-1987. He also was a lecturer of curriculum development and large and small group seminars with corporate executives and managers at the Center for Executive Development in 1995-1998. In 2000 he became a lecturer of curriculum development, teaching, and coaching in external executive development and internal training programs, a position he held till 2013. During 2006 – 2013 he was a partner and Group Leader at Monitor Group.
Dave is Founding Director of The Winthrop Group from 1982 and Senior Partner and Director of Research at Rosc Global, a merchant banking and advisory services firm since 2013.
Davis Dyer writes, teaches, and consults on strategy development, technology transfer, and organizational change and development. In Changing Alliances, for example, Davis and his collaborators Malcolm S. Salter and Alan M. Webber look at the changing American automobile industry of the 1980s as it fought to be competitive with foreign auto companies, primarily those in Japan. Dyer also worked with David B. Sicilia to write Labors of a Modern Hercules: The Evolution of a Chemical Company, a history of Hercules, Inc. The company developed as a spin-off from E. I. Du Pont de Nemours & Co., in 1912 as the result of an antitrust case and went on to become a widely diversified company with aerospace, industrial chemical, and polymer products.
Although primarily interested in the business world, Dyer has also edited a book with Alan Brinkley about the American presidency. The Reader's Companion to the American Presidency, which later appeared as the American Presidency, was first published in 2000 just prior to the beginning of the presidential administration of George W. Bush.
As a former associate editor of Harvard Business Review, Davis also advises individuals and organizations on communications and publications strategies.
