Steel, from a working-class family on Long Island, became a very successful executive in Hollywood and is known for being the first woman to head a major Film studio. Under her watch, Columbia Pictures had success with When Harry Met Sally..., Look Who’s Talking, Postcards From the Edge, Awakenings and Flatliners.
She published her memoirs in 1993, titling it They Can Kill You, But They Can’t Eat You. She also founded her own production company, Atlas Entertainment, with her husband, Charles Roven. Their first film was the popular Cool Runnings, the story of the Jamaican bobsled team.
In 1989, Steel was awarded the Women in Film Crystal Award for outstanding women who, through their endurance and the excellence of their work, have helped to expand the role of women within the entertainment industry.
Steel's film City of Angels was dedicated to her memory.
