Katie Holmes is an American actress, who became famous for her role of Joey Potter on the television series Dawson's Creek (1998 - 2003). She is also known for her parts in Batman Begins, Thank You for Smoking (both 2005), Jack and Jill (2011), Miss Meadows (2014), and Logan Lucky (2017).
Background
Ethnicity:
Holmes’s father is of three quarters German and one quarter Irish descent. Katie’s mother has Irish and English ancestry.
Katie Holmes was born as Kate Noelle ‘Katie’ Holmes on December 18, 1978, in Toledo, Ohio, the United States, to Kathleen Ann (Craft), a philanthropist, and Martin Joseph Holmes, Sr., a lawyer. Holmes was born two months premature at four pounds and became the youngest of five children. She has three sisters and one brother. Her parents have said that her strong-willed personality is probably from being born premature.
Education
Katie Holmes completed her preliminary education from the all-girls Notre Dame Academy, where she was a 4.0 student. The straight-A student had shown an early penchant for acting, performing in school productions such as Hello, Dolly and Damn Yankees. She scored 1310 out of 1600 on her SAT and was accepted to Columbia University (and attended for a summer session); her father wanted her to become a doctor.
At 14 Katie enrolled in modeling classes run by Margaret O'Brien, which led her to the International Modeling and Talent Association (IMTA) Competition held in New York City in 1996. She competed by singing, dancing, and reciting a monologue from To Kill a Mockingbird. Holmes was spotted by a talent scout. She moved to Los Angeles and started auditioning for roles and soon won her first screen role in Ang Lee’s film The Ice Storm (1998). Katie's character was Libbets Casey, a rich New Yorker, who is pursued by two of the main characters. It was a small part, but it marked the beginning of her professional acting career.
Holmes was asked to audition for Kevin Williamson's teen drama Dawson's Creek in Los Angeles but it conflicted with her playing Lola in the school musical Damn Yankees and she politely declined the offer. Fortunately, the producers allowed her to send a videotape, and she won the part of Dawson Leery's childhood sweetheart Joey Potter. Although she had been accepted to study at Columbia University, Katie put her further education on the back burner as the hugely popular series catapulted her to fame
Dawson’s Creek opened to the audience in 1998 to mixed reviews. While the series was appreciated by the critics and audience, her role as Dawson’s best friend earned her national attention. Holmes and the rest of the series’ cast, including James Van Der Beek, Joshua Jackson, and Michelle Williams, quickly became popular television stars.
Hollywood came calling while Holmes was still in the series. Her first leading role came in 1998's Disturbing Behaviour, and she won praise for her part as a supermarket checkout girl in the acclaimed indie ensemble drama Go in 1999.
Over Dawson’s Creek’s run, Holmes worked to show audiences that she was more than just the “cute girl next door.” She took on challenging film roles in Wonder Boys and The Gift (both released in 2000). In Wonder Boys, Holmes plays a college student who has an amorous interest in her professor (Michael Douglas). She portrays a different type of temptress in The Gift, in which she had a controversial nude scene - perhaps an effort to break out from her wholesome image. In 2002, she was seen in the movie, Abandon, in which she played the character of a delusional, homicidal college student. She followed this up by playing the role of a mistress of the public relations agent in Phone Booth and Robert Downey, Jr.'s nurse in The Singing Detective. Not long after those film appearances, the actress starred in the 2003 independent comedy Pieces of April.
Holmes continued to seek out a range of acting roles after Dawson’s Creek ended in 2003. In the big-budget action film Batman Begins (2005), she starred opposite Christian Bale, who appeared in the title role. The film went on to become the most successful film of her career. However, her portrayal of the role of Rachel Dawes, Batman’s childhood sweetheart met with dismal reviews. Around this same time, Holmes made headlines for her personal life, as media outlets began reporting that she’d begun dating popular actor Tom Cruise.
After taking some time off, Holmes returned to acting. She made her Broadway debut in 2008, appearing in a revival of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, which also featured John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest, and Patrick Wilson. In 2008, she made a comeback to the film industry with the comedy Mad Money. However, the riposte did not do much to revive her career, as her performance was widely criticized and mocked. Not the one to be disheartened, she moved to the small screen and starred in an episode of the television show, Eli Stone as Grace, a lawyer. In 2009, she started filming for the remake of the 1970s telefilm Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. The film was released to the audience in 2011. On the big screen, she also starred in The Romantics with Anna Paquin and Josh Duhamel in 2010, also serving as an executive producer on the project.
In 2012, Holmes appeared in Theresa Rebeck's new comedy Dead Accounts on Broadway. Holmes and Chace Crawford were reportedly cast as the leads in the romantic comedy Responsible Adults, to begin shooting in Los Angeles in Fall 2011. In 2015, Holmes joined the third season of Ray Donovan.
Holmes directed a short 2015 documentary for ESPN about Olympic gymnast Nadia Comăneci entitled, Eternal Princess, that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Holmes directed her first movie All We Had. The film stars Katie Holmes, Stefania LaVie Owen, Luke Wilson, Richard Kind, Mark Consuelos, Judy Greer and Eve Lindley. The film was released on December 9, 2016, by Gravitas Ventures.
In 2017, Holmes starred in the heist comedy Logan Lucky, directed by Steven Soderbergh. The film received positive reviews, with many critics praising the cast's performances and Soderbergh's direction, and grossed $48 million worldwide.
In 2018, Holmes appeared in the satirical comedy Dear Dictator, opposite Michael Caine. The same year, she made a cameo in the movie Ocean's 8, starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, and Awkwafina. The film follows a group of women led by Debbie Ocean, the sister of Danny Ocean, who plan a sophisticated heist of the annual Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, United States. Ocean's 8 premiered at Alice Tully Hall on June 5, 2018, and was released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States on June 8, 2018, 11 years to the day of the release of Ocean's Thirteen. The film has grossed over $297 million worldwide and received a lukewarm response from critics, who applauded the chemistry of the cast but found the movie undemanding and less consistent than the films in Soderbergh's trilogy.
In a September 2016 Elle interview, Holmes stated that she is in the process of adapting the Kathleen Tessaro novel Rare Objects into a screenplay and will direct the film. It was announced Holmes will also be leading a feature film based around the self-help book, The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne.
Katie Holmes was annually named by both the British and American editions of FHM magazine as one of the sexiest women in the world from 1999 onward. She was named one of People's "50 Most Beautiful People" in 2003; its sibling Teen People declared her one of the "25 Hottest Stars Under 25" that year, and in 2005, People said she was one of the ten best-dressed stars that year. In 2005, TV Guide ranked Holmes No. 38 on its "50 Sexiest Stars of All Time" list.

Religion
Holmes was raised a Catholic and graduated from an all-girls Catholic school in her hometown. Catholicism isn’t something Holmes has spoken much about, but her religious background goes quite a bit deeper than that.
In 2006, Holmes married Tom Cruise, the controversial Church of Scientology enthusiast. During their courtship, Holmes said things like: "I’m really excited about [Scientology]. I know how important it is to Tom, and I want to be able to share that with him."
The real story came when, in the summer of 2012, Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise. Rumors flew that Scientology was central in the split. Most specifically, reports that the church took issue with how Holmes wanted to discipline her daughter, Suri, sent Katie over the edge.
Following the divorce, Holmes expressed fear that the Church of Scientology was having her followed and she feared for her safety. All the while, fans of mainstream religion were relieved to hear that this sweet girl-next-door had returned to the Catholic Church, registering at Manhattan’s St. Francis Xavier parish and enrolling her daughter in the Convent of the Sacred Heart Catholic School.
Politics
Holmes has never really expressed her position on political or social topics. This could be because she was snatched up by Scientology at a young age and was obligated to take their view on social issues.
Views
In July 2009, Holmes, Nigel Lythgoe, Adam Shankman, and Carrie Ann Inaba announced the launch of a dance scholarship fund called the Dizzy Feet Foundation.
Katie Holmes took part in the National Memorial Day Concert in 2009 in Washington, D.C., in which she honored an Iraq War veteran.
Quotations:
"It's important to try to be creative. I paint, and my mom is going to teach me how to make clothes. I think people should have passions."
"We all keep dreaming, and luckily, dreams really do come true."
"I work very hard, but I also really enjoy time with my family as well. So I take everything as it comes, but I really am very selfish about my family time."
Personality
In early March 2011, Holmes filed a $50-million libel lawsuit against Star magazine following a cover story which insinuated that she took drugs. The suit was settled on April 27, 2011, after which Star wrote a public apology in the May 6, 2011 issue and made an "undisclosed substantial donation" to Holmes's charity, Dizzy Feet Foundation.
Katie Holmes is a devoted runner, she likes to run three to four miles a couple of times a week to clear her head. She participated in and finished the New York Marathon in 2007.
British artist Firexit has two songs with references to Holmes, one called K H (her initials) and a song called The reason I can’t have her featuring samples of Holmes’ singing On My Own from a Dawson’s Creek (1998) episode. A Japanese small band even performed a song entitled “Katie” about her. She was also mentioned in the Bowling for Soup’s song High School Never Ends.

Connections
Holmes dated her Dawson's Creek co-star Joshua Jackson early in the show's run. She met actor Chris Klein in 2000. Klein and Holmes were engaged in late 2003, but in early 2005 she and Klein ended their relationship. Klein and Holmes have remained friends to varying degrees since the breakup.
Holmes began dating actor Tom Cruise in April 2005. Holmes, who was raised a Catholic, began studying Scientology shortly after the couple began dating. They got engaged in June 2005, only seven weeks after the meeting. The couple's daughter, Suri, was born on April 18, 2006, the first anniversary of their first date. The name "Suri" supposedly derives from the Persian meaning "red rose" and the Hebrew as a derivative of Sarah meaning princess. On November 18, 2006, Holmes and Cruise were married in a Scientologist ceremony at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy. The actors' publicist said the couple had "officialized" their marriage in Los Angeles the day before the Italian ceremony.
Holmes and Cruise were last photographed together in Iceland on June 16, 2012. On June 29, Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise in New York after five and a half years of marriage. Following the announcement, those close to Holmes stated that she believed she had reason to fear that Cruise would abduct Suri, and also feared intimidation by the Church of Scientology.
Only ten days after Holmes filed for divorce, on July 9, 2012, attorneys for the couple announced that the couple had signed a divorce settlement. This was the first divorce for Holmes and the third for Cruise. Holmes has custody of Suri.
