Dawnine Spivak attended Augustana College, the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Naropa Institute (now Naropa University). She holds a Master of Education degree.
Dawnine Spivak worked as a teacher of writing and literature at colleges and in classes for gifted children. She was also a teacher of Japanese literature. Spivak created spaces and occasions for Poets Against Hunger readings to alleviate childhood hunger in Vermont. She co-directed Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba.
Spivak is an author of "Grass Sandals: The Travels of Basho" (1997) and "Winter into Spring". She scripted and directed Inanna, a theater piece.
