2020Kris says, that when she was growing up, it was hard to find strong female role models for her stories. She has loved the mystery since she first discovered Nancy Drew as a little girl. Nancy Drew, a fictional character, a sleuth in an American mystery series, created by publisher Edward Stratemeyer as the female counterpart to his Hardy Boys series, was such an intrepid, adventurous heroine - the exact opposite of what Kris was being taught to be at home and in school.
Today, Neri says, that when she reads books in the Nancy Drew series, especially in their original form, she finds them a little stilted and racially insensitive, to say the least. But as a young girl, Nancy Drew gave her the image of the smart, courageous girl Kris could also be. And that shaped the woman and the writer Neri would become. Those books were actually so influential in Kris's life, that these books sparked in her a love of the mystery form, primarily because it reinforced Neri's own belief, that justice is critically important. Since one sometimes sees too little justice in the real world, Neri thinks both writers and readers often need to experience vicariously the sensation of right prevailing in print. What Neri likes most about the modern mystery is that, while justice is always served, it isn't always in the most obvious or predictable way.
Neri also says, that she has observed, that, both in life and in mystery fiction, crimes are often committed to keep wrongs hidden. In life, too often, the secrets, that should be aired, are not, and the ones, that should be kept, to protect the innocent, are exposed, thus hurting the innocent in both situations. On her mind, the desire to write is often accompanied by an equally strong desire to be published and read. Too often frustrated writers find themselves trying to write, not the stories, that grow inside them, but what they think will sell. Not only are publishing trends too erratic to predict, but that outlook is guaranteed to produce soulless writing. Neri thinks, that the only way to write with the conviction, that will influence publishing decision-makers, is to write the things you love and in which you genuinely believe.
However, Neri also advises writers to become staunch, persistent advocates of their own writings. No one else will ever believe in a writer the way she or he believes in her/himself. With publishing opportunities shrinking, writers need to bring as much creativity and determination to their marketing efforts as they do to their writing. Kris believes, that, before attending a conference, at which there might be an opportunity for meeting agents and editors, a new writer should write a short, sharp description of his book and commit it to memory. Then, when an opportunity to talk about his book arises, he can rattle out a compelling pitch without fumbling.
Quotations:
"Though I've written a fair amount of nonfiction and even a couple of romance short stories and I'd like to write some mainstream fiction in the future, the literary love of my life has always been mystery fiction."
"I don't think we choose our genres, I think they choose us, by meeting needs we may not even know we have."
"I like that in writing crime fiction I get to decide, which secrets are kept and which are brought to light. Some might say it's playing God, but I think it's just putting things right."
"It's quite a heady thrill to know my work is being read by people across the globe. Beyond my own personal experience, though, the fact, that fiction does well in translations, makes me think we humans share many commonalities, that transcend national borders and language differences."
Kris is a former member of the Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, American Crime Writers League, Romance Writers of America, Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
Kris is fond of reading, hiking, skiing, swimming and cooking. Neri has been a lifelong voracious reader. Her tastes are varied. She loves mysteries - both cozies and those, that are darkish, but humorous mysteries are her favorites. She also reads thrillers, urban fantasy, humorous urban fantasy, general fiction, personal growth and a little bit of everything else.
On July 29, 1968, Neri married Joseph R. Neri, an investment advisor.
