From INTRODUCTION: "Zoltan Kodaly, whose achievement in raising the musical literacy and taste of the children in his native country of Hungary is well known, said that children can best learn to sing in tune through two-part unaccompanied singing. This was to be begun at a very early age, possibly even first grade. There are no piano accompaniments in this collection since the piano is a tempered instrument, reliance on which is not only a crutch but also may lead to out of tune singing, especially when the piano is out of tune. Unaccompanied songs help to develp the inner ear and the critical faculty of children to listen to each other more carefully. At the same time they can lay a foundation for the appreciation of the contrapuntal idiom because of the independence of vocal line in both parts. In some of these songs the original melody has been divided between the top and bottom; in other songs a completely new counter melody has been composed. Always an attempt has been made to keep the second part singable and to avoid the kind of dull rhythmic and melodic 'fill in' that occurs in many band and orchestral arrangements for children. Harmonic considerations have been secondary. Out of the 27 pentatonic songs (or those of even fewer notes) 22 have been kept in the pentatonic idiom, rather than to suggest typical piano accompaniments through addition of the fourth and seventh steps somewhere in the melodic line. Many of the songs will seem strange to teachers accustomed to using a piano." Please see 2nd scan for Index of Titles included.
