Dennis Trinkle was born on August 24, 1968, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is the son of educators, John and Gayle Trinkle.
Dennis Trinkle attended Thomas Carr Howe High School in 1983-1987. Then he graduated from De Pauw University in 1991, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in history with magna cum laude. He also earned a Master of Arts in history with the highest distinction in 1993 and a Doctor of Philosophy in history in 1998 at the University of Cincinnati, a Master of Business Administration at the University of Phoenix in 2003, and got the Certified Director at the Rotman School of Management in 2016.
From 1979 to 1985, Dennis Trinkle was the founder and chief executive officer of the Start Smart Educational Software, which developed one of the first animated computer games to teach pre-schoolers and kindergartners their alphabet and simple sight words. After education, he became an associate technology coordinator and assistant professor of history at DePauw University in 1997. In the same year, he co-founded the Educational Technology Consulting Group and also became a managing partner. Then, in 2006 Trinkle held the position of chief information officer at Valparaiso University for two years. Moreover, he worked as a chief executive officer at the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System in 2008-2009, a provost and chief academic officer at the Harrison College in 2009, a provost at the Chef's Academy in 2009-2015, and a national chief executive officer at the College Mentors For Kids in 2015-2016. He also was a fellow of the International Center for Computer-Enhanced Learning in 2000 and an executive director of the American Association for History and Computing. To date, Dennis Trinkle serves a board of directors at the North Coast College since 2015 and a strategic advisor and investor at Black Ash Technologies since 2017. He likewise works as a strategic advisor at the EI Games since 2018 and at the KITe Connections since 2020. In 2019 he became a chair board of directors at the Certell and a partner at the Adobe Road Winery. Besides, Trinkle is currently teaching at Ball State University. Plus, since 2017, Trinkle directors of the Applied Research Institute and Center for Information and Communication Sciences. Trinkle also participated in several national and international forums on the use of information technology in research and education.
Additionally, Dennis Trinkle is a writer. He is the author and editor of multiple guides to historical research on the Internet and using technology in the history classroom and also a contributor to journals, including Journal for the Association of History and Computing, Studies on Voltaire and the Eighteenth Century, and Journal of Social Education.
With co-author Scott Merriman, Trinkle has published an ongoing History Highway series addressing general history, United States history, European history, and world history. The first of Trinkle's research guides, The History Highway: A Guide to Internet Resources, was published in 1997. The History Highway and later editions contain Web site addresses and brief descriptions of thousands of sites, organized by region, time period, or subject. The History Highway 2000 also discusses Internet etiquette and the use of e-mail, newsgroups, and discussion lists. Trinkle and Merriman also edited the 2001 book History.edu: Essays on Teaching with Technology, aimed at history teachers interested in incorporating new information technology in their classrooms. They surveyed history professors to learn how they were using the Internet to make their courses more interactive, that to enhance learning.
In addition to publishing on technology and education, Trinkle also works in the field of eighteenth-century French history. His works in this specialty include The Napoleonic Press: The Public Sphere and Oppositionary Journalism.
