Mais il na pas dédaigné les applications, et il a eu la rare bonne fortune de pouvoir lui-même mettre en pratique ses découvertes, dans lindustrie dabord, puis dans la médecine. Dautre part, élu membre de lAcadémie française à la place de Littré, il a montré aux philosophes que son puissant esprit savait les comprendre : dans un langage à la fois noble et précis, il leur a exposé les convictions auxquelles sa vie scientifique lavait conduit et les conséquences quil avait tirées de ses belles études. Ses découvertes occupent, dans les théories relatives à lévolution de la vie, une place considérable. Il serait dun haut intérêt détudier à ce point de vue les travaux de M. Pasteur ; mais, aujourdhui, cest du côté de leur utilité pratique que nous voulons les examiner...

Notre siècle aura demandé aux sciences la satisfaction de deux goûts bien différens. Il a dabord le goût de la vie confortable et facile et fait grand cas des progrès industriels qui ajoutent au bien-être de lexistence. Il a ensuite le goût de la philosophie appelée positive, et pense tirer de létude des sciences des clartés nouvelles sur lorigine et la nature de tout ce qui nous entoure.

Denys Cochin was the son of Augustin Cochin, also a politician and writer
Collège Stanislas de Paris.
After graduating from the school Louis-le-Grand, he joined the military as a quartermaster in the eight cuirassier, before becoming flag carrier for General Charles Denis Bourbaki. After the end of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, he was attache in the embassy in London for a year. Returning to France in 1872, he undertook studies in chemistry in the laboratory of Louis Pasteur.
During World War I, he worked on the development of explosives and chemical weapons.
In 1881 he was elected councilman of the 7th arrondissement of Paris. From 1893 to 1919, he represented Paris in the French National Assembly.
Symbolizing the alignment of L"union sacrée, he was Minister of State in Aristide Briand"s fourth administration from 29 October 1915 to 12 December 1916, and then under-secretary for foreign policy matters responsible for dealing with the blockade of Germany under Alexandre Ribot from 20 March to August 1917. He resigned predicting the breakup of L"union sacréest

He was elected to Seat 11 of the Académie française on 16 February 1911. As an art collector, Cochin bought several impressionist paintings together with Paul Durand-Ruel including one by Claude Monet.
