Derek Hudson was an editor who held editing posts at The Times, The Spectator, and Oxford University Press. His first editing job was for Birmingham Post where he also wrote some theater criticism, and in 1939 he joined The London Times where he worked for the next ten years in various departments, including the Home, Letters, and Obituaries sections. From 1949 till 1953 Hudson was literary editor at The Spectator. He freelanced for two years before being hired by Oxford University Press where he notably edited the publisher's World's Classics series.
Hudson's wide range of interests led him to publish books ranging from biographies and histories to essays and selections of short stories. Some of these include A Poet in Parliament: The Life of Winthrop Mackworth Praed, 1802-1839 (1939), British Journalists and Newspapers (1945), Modern English Short Stories: Second Series (1956), Arthur Rackham: His Life and Work (1960), Oxford Publishing since 1478 (1966), For Love of Painting: The Life of Sir Gerald Kelly (1975), and Booms and Busts in Botswana: Where Is the Economy Today? (1992). He was also the author of Writing between the Lines: An Autobiography (1965).
