Hahn received a diploma from the gymnasium in Luzern in 1969.
Hahn began his career as a docent at the Conservatoire de musique de Genève in 1970. His debut was held at Wigmore Hall in London in 1981. Since 1982 Detlef has been a professor at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He performs and broadcasts regularly in Europe, the Far East and Australia, and records for labels such as ASV, Somm and 2L, including the complete works for violin and piano by Szymanowski and Korngold.
Since 2001 Hahn has been working as a guest professor at the State Academy in Oslo. In 2012, he became a professor at the Royal College of Music. He has produced many publications, collaborating with eminent musicologists and musicians such as Jonathan Del Mar and Andrew Manze. Detlef edits for the Wieniawski Musical Society.
On August 21, 1980 Detlef Hahn married Ruth Walters. They have two children.
