Ian McDonald struggled on the harsh Colorado plains to make a home for his family. His friend came to escort the family away from an Indian uprising to the safety of Fort Lupton. Thus begins the novel of the old west, a story of a pioneer family, a farm which had to be carved out of dry dirt, a locust plague, and the menace of hostile Indians. Looming over all was the powerful presence of Rick Owen and a young Indian woman who lived in the shadow of the family, protecting them all with a dire secret she cannot tell.

(It began when a cumulus cloud over a lake in the Canadian...)
It began when a cumulus cloud over a lake in the Canadian wilderness suddenly began to change shape. It rose high above the rest and acquired the anvil head of a rain cloud, and then slowly turned pale green and deluged the land beneath with a deadly poison. From that point on the story races through murders, international plots, high and low politics in Washington, clandestine government operations, and a shadowy enemy in whose hands held the secret of the green rain.

(The rickety frame-and-fabric machines of the early 1900s ...)
The rickety frame-and-fabric machines of the early 1900s hardly inspired confidence in the potential of military aviation; but between the Wright brothers' demonstration of a military aircraft in 1908 and the German invasion of Poland in 1939 a handful of determined visionaries struggled to convince a skeptical, jealous Army, and Congress, that future warfare would depend heavily on air forces.
