John was born on August 1, 1915 in Safford, Arizona, United States; the son of Franklin Howard John and Frances (Dewitt) John.
John received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Principia College in 1936. A year later he earned his Master of Arts degree from the University of Chicago. Also in 1938, Dewitt was given a Master of Science degree from Columbia University.
John began his career as an editorial page editor of St. Petersburg Times in 1938. A year later he took a position of a member of staff of Christian Science Monitor magazine and held it until 1942. In 1962, Dewitt became a manager of Christian Science committees on publication of the same magazine. Two years later he was appointed an editor of Christian Science Monitor magazine.
Also John served on board of directors of Christian Science Monitor magazine from 1970 to 1980. In 1981, he held a position of an editor of Christian Science Journal, Sentinel and Herald, where he worked until 1985.
On February 14, 1942 Dewitt John married Morley Marshall. They have 2 children.
