Dhirubhai Ambani is a true legend of Indian business. He started to work as a simple clerk and reached the top of business career, founded his own company and made his family the second richest one in the world.
Background
Dhirubhai Ambani was born on 28 December 1932 in a reputed family in Chorward. His father, Ramaniklal Ambani, was a school teacher the only earning member in a family, that's why his family was not very strong financially. Dhirubhai had two brothers and two sisters, Trilochanaben and Jasuben.
During the weekends, Dhirubhai used to sell bhajias to pilgrims in Mount Girnar.
Education
He was highly intelligent and used his physical abilities over cramming school lessons. He was said to be impatient of the oppressive grinding mill in the classroom.
After the school Dhirubhai wanted to continue his education and even passed matriculation examinations, but due to his father's illness he had to move to Aden and work together with his elder brother Ramnikbhai.
Career
At the age of 16 Dhirubhai started working as a clerk in A. Besse & Co. Initially Dhirubhai worked in the trading section of the firm, later he became the agent for distribution of Shell refinery products to the Shell oil refinery and the first Oil harbor that came up in Aden in 1954. The same year he married Kokilaben.
He returned to India in 1958 and started his own business in spices. However this attempt occured unprofitable, therefore Dhirubhai he moved into textiles and opened a factory in Naroda. Several years later, in 1966, he founded Reliance Industries Limited along with Amit Mehra, who had played a pivotal role in helping and supporting Dhirubhai.
Towards the late-80s, Reliance became India's most influential and profitable concerns.
Through Reliance Industries, he arranged computer education and training for thousands of students in various schools in Bombay. In one of his last speeches he told to the children: "You are getting an opportunity. Make the best use of it. Be daring. Think big. You can be the best. If you believe in this, you will be the best."
