Papalia received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College in 1968. Two years later she earned her Master of Science degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1971 from West Virginia University.
Papalia began her career as an assistant professor of child and family studies at the University of Wisconsin in 1971. Four years later she took a position of an associate professor at the same university. Then in 1978, Diane was appointed a professor at the University of Wisconsin. Nine years later she became an adjunct professor of psychology in pediatrics at Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. Nowadays she is a professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin.
