Arentz studied photography at the University of Michigan (1969-72), where he explored contact print processes with Phil Davis. He was greatly affected by the work and writings of Edward Weston.
Since 1979 he has been working as the Photographic Workshop Coordinator at the Museum of Northern Arizona and, since 1980, he has also been an instructor at Northern Arizona University.
Large-format photography is Arentz' central focus, and, at the time of this writing, he was working in the Four Comers area of the USA.
He was a member of SPE.
