(Few frontiersmen in the late eighteenth century and early...)
Few frontiersmen in the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century epitomized the reckless energies of the West and the lust for adventure as did John Smith T. - pioneer, gunfighter, entrepreneur, militia colonel, miner, judge and folk hero. In this fascinating biography, Dick Steward traces the colorful life of this personality from his early days in Virginia through his young adulthood. Dick then describes John's remarkable career in the wilds of Missouri and his armed raids to gain land from Indians, Spaniards and others.

(While virtually every historical work deals with the subj...)
While virtually every historical work deals with the subject of violence in some way or another, few if any books take up violence as the sole theme. "Beyond the Sabbath", Steward's last of a trilogy of books on nineteenth century Missouri violence, attempts to chart a new course. It is an effort to place an entire hundred years of violence within a new conceptual framework. As such, it treats the subject both in a chronological and topical order. Steward's subject takes the reader from the days of Spanish and French rule in Missouri through the chaotic and frantic era up to and following the Civil War and Reconstruction. The work concludes with a critical assessment of the state's leaders in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Taken as a whole, it provides a fascinating glimpse of Missouri's past and a lens, through which to assess its present and future.
