Harry Summers was born on May 6, 1932, in Covington, Kentucky, United States.
Harry G. Summers enlisted in the Army at the age of 15, hiding his correct age. He served in Korea during the Korean War and decided to make the Army his career.
Later Summers received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland and a Master of Military Arts and Science from the Army Command & General Staff College.
Harry G. Summers started his military career at the age of 15. In 1957 he was commissioned as a lieutenant. In the mid-1960s, Summers was wounded twice in Vietnam. However, in 1974 he returned to Saigon as one of the U.S. negotiators with North Vietnam on a prisoner of war issues.
Summers retired from the Army in 1985 and became editor of Vietnam Magazine in 1988. He published his first book On Strategy in 1982. Later he wrote such books as The Vietnam War Almanac, New World Strategy and Korean War Almanac. Summers also worked as a lecturer at Stanford, Harvard, Georgetown and Vanderbilt. In 1996, he held the Fleet Adm. Chester W. Nimitz Lectureship at UC Berkeley. He acted as a military analyst for NBC News, making more than 250 network television appearances.
Harry G. Summers was an American Army colonel and writer who was famous for his books about the Vietnam War and other areas of military history. He also was a frequent military analyst on television broadcasts during the Gulf War.
Harry G. Summers received such awards as the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star for valor and two Purple Hearts for wounds received in action. He also received the Olive Branch Award in 1990 and the News Media Award in 1991. In 1993, Summers received the Vietnam Veterans of America’s 1993 Excellence in the Arts award.
