Dieter Mueller-Dombois is a German-born American botanist. He was born in Bethel Germany on the 26th of July, 1925. He moved to Canada in 1951 and from there to the US in 1963. Still, in school, he was drafted and served as a motorcycle messenger in the artillery of the German Army. At the end of World War II, he was taken prisoner of war by American troops and was released in September 1945. After the war, he finished school with a High School Diploma and later graduated from the University of Hohenheim, Germany as an agricultural engineer in 1951. He then emigrated to Canada where he graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in Forest Ecology from the University of British Columbia in 1960. From 1958 until 1963, he worked as a Forest Research Officer for the Canadian Department of Forestry until he was appointed a Professor of Botany at the University of Hawaii in 1963. Mueller-Dombois served as a Professor of Botany at the University of Hawaii until his retirement as a Professor Emeritus in 1990. He supervised his PH.D.-students, published research and textbooks and was awarded various prizes, scholarships, and an honorary doctorate.
