Dietrich Mateschitz was born on the 20th of May, 1944 in Sankt Marein im Mürztal, Styria, Austria. Both his parents were primary school teachers and divorced when he was a child. He separated from his family at a very young age.

After completing his marketing degree at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, he was hired by Unilever for marketing of detergents. Afterwards, he started working for Blendax, a Germany-based cosmetic company.
After graduation Dietrich was hired by Unilever. Then he worked for Blendax. While working there, he discovered the drink Krating Daeng, which is now known as Redbull. He launched the company in 1984 with Chaleo Yoovidhya, the Thai founder of the Krating Daeng energy drink, with the launch in Austria in 1987.

Mr Mateschitz bought the Fijian island Laucala. He has a huge space-age hangar at Salzburg Airport where he stores a DC-6B plane that used to belong to Yugoslavia president Tito, and a collection of other planes, Formula 1 cars and motorbikes. The hangar is complete with gourmet restaurant Ikarus, the ThreeSixty Bar and the Mayday Bar, which float on glass at the top of the hangar.
