While still a high-school student joined Narodnaya volya (People's Will) Party, formed student group and conducted propaganda among workers and poor Don Cossacks. 1883 arrested; 1886 joined Aleksandr Ul’yanov’s student terrorist group. 1887 exiled; 1900 entered Saint St. Petersburg Mining Institute.
After graduate worked for Geological Committee. 1922-1925 professor, Moscow Mining Academy. From 1903 made surveys of Baku oil deposits.
Devised method of compiling structural maps of oil deposits. 1909 after years of prospecting, established that the Bibi-Eybat oil deposit extends under the sea-bed. 1908 detected vast oil reserves at the Surakhan deposit, which was formerly thought to contain only gas.
Proved the presence of oil at the Puta and Kara-Chukhur deposits and pioneered their industry exploitation ¡wrote a monograph proving the existence of a large oil deposit on Svyatoy Ostrov (Artyom Island). Also discovered an oil deposit to the cast of Surakhanov. Correctly predicted that the Mardakyany region was petroliferous.
Advocated study of the hydrogeology of oil deposits. Proposed the use of electr methods of studying wells (carottage) and organized their large-scale application.
Since religion offers a complete set of answers to the problems of purpose, morality, origins, or science, it discourages exploration of those areas by suppressing curiosity, denies its followers a broader perspective, and prevents social, moral and scientific progress.
Marxism–Leninism as the only truth could not, by its very nature, become outdated.
