1892-1902 studied at Saint St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under P. P. Chistyakov and I. Ye. Repin; 1896-1900 at Azhbe’s studio in Munich.
Prominent realist, master draftsman and expert on everyday life and art of 19th-century Russia. Did illustrations for plays of Griboyedov, Gogol, Tolstoy and Chekhov. Taught at Academy of Arts.
1920-1929 designed theater sets, mainly for the Malyy Theater. Designed sets for: Les (The Forest) (1921). Revizor (The Government Inspector) (1922.
1949); Bednost’ ne porok (Poverty Is Number Vice) (1924, 1953);Turgenev’s Nakhlebnik (The Parasite) and Zavtrak u predvoditelya (Breakfast at the Marshal’s) (1924). Svoi lyudi - sochtyomsya (Birds of a Feather Flock Together) (1929). A. North. Tolstoy's Lyubov'- kniga zolotaya (Love Is a Golden Book) (1923).
Helped design sets for Kugel’s Nikolay I i dekabristy (Nicholas 1 and the Decembrists) (1926).
