1878 graduate Saint St. Petersburg Mining Institute. 1880 graduate Saint St. Petersburg University.
1880-1882 worked at A. M. Butlerov’s laboratory and did research on the vapor tension of solutions under Professor Kundt at Strasbourg University. 1882-1886 assistant professor, 1886-1891 professor, 1891-1907 head, Chair of Inorganic Chemistry, Saint St. Petersburg University. Also professor, Saint St. Petersburg Institute of Communication Engineer.
1884 defended master’s thesis on the vapor tension of solutions, in which he formulated Konovalov’s laws and, by a development of Mendeleyev’s theory, proved that there is no clear-cut division between compounds and solutions and that the latter are just a special state of the former. 1885, in his doctor’s thesis on the role of catalytic elements in dissociation phenomena, introduced the concept of the active surface, which played an important part in the development of the theory of heterogeneous catalysis. 1900-1904 professor, from 1904 director, Saint St. Petersburg Mining Institute.
