Worker by trade; 1905 member, workers’ battle squad in Nikolayev. May 1916 drafted into Russian Army for taking part in a strike at Gorlovka Mines and sent to Moscow. 1917 elected member, Moscow Soviet.
Took part in 1917 October Revol in Moscow. Late 1917 military comissar in Donbass. Musterd miners’ Red Guard unit and fought against Kaledin’s forces, at Kiev and in Northern Caucasus.
1918 commanded regt, brigade, then 1st Steel Division which marched 800 km from Nevinnomysskaya to Tsaritsyn and on 15 October 1918 struck Krasnov’s forces in the rear. 1919-1920 commanded separate partisan unit, then forces group on CaspianCaucasian Front. Commanded 1st Cavalry Corps and Cavalry Forces Group in operations against General Wrangel.
March 1921 commanded 18th Cavalry Division. After Civil War senior economics and government work in Northern Caucasus. 10 June 1938 arrested by State Security organs.
