The writer was awarded the awards of the magazines “Ogonyok” (1989) and “Znamya” (1995). In 1995, for the collection "Country of Origin" became a laureate of "Antibukera". He published two books of prose. His works are translated in England, France, Germany, and other countries. Critics compared his work with the texts of Platonov, Camus, and Faulkner (Bakin himself noted that Platonov's work was discovered by writing all the texts of the collection "Country of Origin").
From 1982 to 1984 he served in the Soviet Army. He lived in Moscow in Dorogomilovo; worked as a truck driver; led a non-public way of life (and, according to his own remark, "was never present in the professional writers' community because he had a different profession"). According to reports of 2007 and 2008, Bakin had been working on a novel with the preliminary title "From death to birth", an extract from this novel was published.
Died in Moscow on April 7, 2015. He was buried in the closed columbarium of the Vagankovskoye cemetery.
In March 2016 in Germany, Dmitri Bakin's memorable book "About the Fall of the Catastrophe" was published, which included, in essence, everything that he had managed to write.
In 2017, he was posthumously awarded the International Buninsky Prize formulated as "For a bright creative contribution to Russian literature."
