Dmitriy Nalbandyan was a Soviet painter.

Background

Dmitry Nalbandyan was born on September 15, 1906 in Tiflis.

Education

Nalbandyan studied at the Tbilissi Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied in the class of E. Lancere in 1924 – 1929.

Career

After the education Dmitriy worked as an animator in the "Goskinoprom" and at the Odessa Film Studio. In 1931, the artist moved to Moscow. During his artistic career Nalbandyan created a lot of portraits of representatives of the Soviet political elite, including Joseph Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev, and Leonid Brezhnev. Among the artists, the informal nickname of Nalbandyan became the first brush of Politburo (Political Bureau in the USSR). In 1978, for his group portrait "Varnatun", painted in 1974 - 1976, depicting the representatives of Armenian culture, the artist was highly praised.

Dmitry Nalbandyan's paintings are represented in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and at many leading museums in Russia. His self-portrait has been part of the Uffizi Gallery's collection in Florence, Italy, since 1982. He died on July 2, 1993 in Moscow from acute heart failure. Dmitry Nalbandyan retains authority not only in museums but also on the art market. His works regularly appear at auctions where they always capture the interest of collectors.

Achievements

  • During his long artistic life Nalbandyan became famous for creating many portraits of representatives of the Soviet political elite, including Joseph Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev and Leonid Brezhnev. In 1969 he was named the People's Artist of the USSR.
