( The serious study of humor has burgeoned in the last tw...)
The serious study of humor has burgeoned in the last two decades, spawning a wealth of publications touching upon an array of topics crossing national, cultural, and disciplinary lines. This research bibliography captures the vibrancy and significance of the field of humor studies while documenting its output. Organized into ten broad chapters reflecting types of humor and topics of humor research, it provides extensive bibliographies on forty-five fields of humor study, each introduced by an essay outlining trends and pointing to major findings. An appendix of humor research institutes, journals, scholars and academic programs as well as a subject and author index to the thousands of sources complete the volume. Intended largely for library use by scholars and students in humor studies, the volume's topical essays are valuable for text use in related courses; the work's extensive bibliographies will foster research in diverse fields with a focus on humor.

( Ireland has generated an inordinately large number of s...)
Ireland has generated an inordinately large number of storytellers, and Irish short stories bear a striking resemblance to Irish jokes. The tradition of telling jokes and stories in pubs resulted in the core of Irish-written literature, and many Irish short stories have the same narrative structure as the jokes on which they are based. This reference is a comprehensive guide to humor in Irish literature from the 16th century to the present day. An introductory essay discusses the essential nature of Irish humor, and how Irish humor developed out of pain and tragedy that resulted in a diaspora. The chapters that follow are devoted to particular centuries. Each chapter includes entries for individual authors, with entries arranged chronologically to show the development of humor over time. Each entry discusses the nature of humor in the author's works and includes a bibliography. A detailed index allows alphabetical access to information on authors and subjects.

(In this vibrant second edition, the authors have drawn fr...)
In this vibrant second edition, the authors have drawn from their own multiple years of teaching and from the knowledge and ideas of 50 linguists and ESL teachers who specialize in particular languages. New to this edition is Part I, an entire section on English spelling as a morphophonemic system. Here, Nilsen and Nilsen clearly explain concepts and patterns of English spelling, pronunciation, and meaning to ease the process of learning English for non-native students as well as their teachers. In addition, the authors provide sample activities that creatively and effectively engage students in grasping a particular concept, and include illustrative examples that show English is a systemic language. In Part II, the authors provide extensive lists of both vowel and consonant contrasts, each with phonetic diagrams and descriptions, minimal pairs (both isolated and in sentences), and specific languages for which the contrast may be problematic. These valuable examples help students hear and produce pronunciation differences that are important in English and bring their pronunciation closer to that of native English speakers. Both prospective and practicing teachers will appreciate the flexibility and freedom afforded by these well-designed materials. (Teachers of English to speakers of other languages face m...)
Teachers of English to speakers of other languages face many challenges, not the least of which is the linguistic diversity of their students. Each student faces difficulties with different English sounds depending on those sounds and distinctions of his or her native language. To help minimize the time spent tailoring classroom materials to the needs of each student, Nilsen and Nilsen have compiled a comprehensive volume on those sound contrasts distinguished in English. They provide extensive lists of both vowel and consonant contrasts, each with phonetic diagrams and descriptions, minimal pairs (both isolated and in sentences), and specific languages for which the contrast may be problematic. Both prospective and practicing teachers will appreciate the freedom of not having to compile these materials themselves. Instead, they can focus on their primary goal the teaching of English.
