Donald Hatch Andrews

Background

Andrews was born on June 11, 1898 in Southington, Connecticut, United States; the son of Russell Gad Andrews and Mary Boies (Hatch) Andrews.

Education

Andrews studied at Philips-Exeter Academy. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1923 from Yale University.

Career

Andrews began his career as a research assistant in chemistry from Yale University in 1923. A year later he became a research fellow at University of California at Berkeley. Then in 1925, Donald took a position of an international research fellow at the University of Leiden. Also he served as a research fellow at Bartol Research Foundation from 1926 to 1927.

He joined the chemistry faculty at the Johns Hopkins University in 1927 as a professor of chemistry. Nine years later he held the position of a chairman of the department at the Johns Hopkins University. Also Andrews was a director of Cryogeny Laboratory at that university. In 1957, he became a B. N. Baker professor of chemistry at the Johns Hopkins University and held it for six years. Since 1963 he was a professor emeritus at the same university.

In addition, in 1963, Donald became a professor of chemistry at Florida Atlantic University, where he worked until 1966. Since 1967 he was a distinguished professor emeritus at that university.

Achievements

• Andrews was a leader in the construction of a superconducting bolometer, a device which measures heat with infra-red rays.

Membership

Andrews was a member of Royal Chemical Society, New York Academy of Sciences, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Philosophical Society and club, Appalachian Mountain.

Connections

On June 20, 1939 Donald Andrews married Josephine Adair Veeder, with whom he divorced in 1950. They had a son. On September 23, 1950 he married Elizabeth Howland. He has two grandsons.
