Johnston was born on March 29, 1898 in North Jackson, Ohio, United States; the son of Edgar Francis Johnston and Adelaide Sarah (Simpson) Johnston.
Johnston received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Muskingum College (nowadays Muskingum University) in 1922. The same year he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Wooster College. In 1928, Herrick was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of California.
Johnston began his career as a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley in 1925. Three years later he took a position of an instructor in chemistry at the University of California. In 1929, Herrick was appointed an assistant professor of physical chemistry at Ohio State University. In 1933, he held a postion of an associate professor at the same university. Then in 1938, Herrick became a professor at Ohio State University, where he served until 1954.
In 1952, he founded his own company H. L. Johnston Company Inc. to produce deuterium for the first "thermonuclear device" which was successfully tested at Eniwetok Atoll on November 1, 1952.
Johnston's company, H. L. Johnston Company Inc., developed huge mobile refrigerated dewars for transporting bulk liquid hydrogen and even larger mobile plants for generating liquid hydrogen, for the United States Air Force.
In 1970, the War Research Building at Ohio State University was renamed Johnston Laboratory in his honour.
Johnston was a member of the American Physical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, International Institute of Refrigeration, International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and American Chemical Society.
On June 14, 1923 Herrick Johnston married Margaret Gardner Vanderbilt. They have three children.
