Donald Johnson Greene

Background

Donald Greene was born on November 21, 1916 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was the son of Waldron Joseph Greene and Katharine Annie (Beaton) Greene.

Education

Donald Greene received Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating from University of Saskatchewan in 1941. Seven years later he attained Master of Arts degree at the University College, London. In 1973 Donald got his Doctor of Literature degree at University of London. Some time later Greene continued his studies and in 1985 obtained Doctor of Letters degree at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.

Career

Donald started his career as a teacher at rural elementary schools in Saskatchewan and Alberta. In 1948, after serving in the Canadian Army during World War II, Greene accepted a teaching post at the University of Saskatchewan. His teaching career spanned nearly four decades and he taught at numerous universities, including the University of California, University of Toronto, Brandeis University and others.

Donald served as Leo S. Bing Professor of English at the University of Southern California from 1968 to 1984.

Donald Greene was also the editor of Eighteenth-Century Studies and Johnsonian News Letter, and wrote several books.

Achievements

• Greene gained prominence as a scholar of eighteenth-century literature, especially with regards to the works of Samuel Johnson. He also received acclaim for his work The Politics of Samuel Johnson, originally published in 1960.
