Kennedy began his career as an assistant professor at Syracuse University in 1956. Three years later he took a position of an association professor at the same university. Then in 1960, Donald became an assistant professor and association professor in 1962 at Stanford University. In 1965, he was appointed a professor at that university, where he served until 1977.
Also Kennedy served as a chairman of the department of biological sciences at Stanford University from 1965 to 1972. In 1973, he held a position of a director of the Program in Human Biology at the same university, where he worked until 1977. The same years Donald was Benjamin Crocker Professor of Human Biology at Stanford University.
He worked as a commissioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration in 1977-1979. In 1979, Kennedy was appointed a provost of Stanford University.
