Donald McKenzie started his career as a trainee reporter at Motherwell Times. Later he became a subeditor at Daily Express. He also worked as an assistant press officer at the British Colonial Office during the Second World War.
Donald McKenzie wrote his first play, Robbie Burns Slept Here, in 1956. This play was produced in at Lyceum Theatre in 1956, and later in at King’s Theatre. His next play, The Baillie, was performed by Scottish Actors Company in 1970. He also wrote The World Traveller, in 1983.
Donald McKenzie was married twice. He had two children from his first marriage.
