To quote Logunov, "a high-energy proton accelerator actually is a factory for the production of secondary particles--pi-mesons, k-mesons, antiprotons, neutrinos." By means of deflecting magnets and magnetic lenses, the charged secondary particles can be collected and focused into beams and studied. According to Logunov, the investigations at Serpukhov are bound to yield important information on the structure of the particles and on their nuclear interactions at high energies. "One of the first aims of the experiments at 76 billion electron volts," Logunov states, "is to inquire whether the laws observed at lower energies and furnishing a basis for various theoretical assumptions are still valid." He says, "On the basis of modern concepts of space and time, it is possible to formulate some forecasts related to the nature of high-energy interaction between the particles. A check on these forecasts is a matter of great urgency, for we cannot assert in advance that our present-day concept of the properties of space and time, based on observations of 'long distances,' will prove equally valid for very insignificant distances." Logunov was selected for the Serpukhov assignment because he was the most promising in the Soviet firmament of young nuclear physicists. The only son of a tannery worker, he was born in the village of Obsharovka in the Volga area on December 30, 1926. He started out to study aircraft engines and radio-engineering at the Moscow Aviation Institute. In 1949, he switched to Moscow University and theoretical physics, graduating in 1951. He stayed on at the university to do research on cosmic rays. He wanted to find out what happens if a charged particle flies into the interstellar chaotically moving gas. Will it be...
