Ameel began his career as an assistant in zoology at the University of Michigan in 1928. Four years later he took a position of a fellow at the same university. Then in 1933, Donald was appointed an associate professor of biology at Augustana College, where he served until 1935.
He worked as an instructor of zoology at Kansas State University from 1937 to 1942. In 1942, Ameel became an assistant professor at that university. In 1945, he held a position of a professor at Kansas State University, where he served until 1967.
Ameel was a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society of Parasitologists, American Microscopical Society, Kansas Academy of Science, Helminthological Society of Washington, Society of Systemic Zoology, Riley County History Society, Sigma Xi, Phi Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi and Gamma Sigma Delta.
On August 3, 1937 Donald Ameel married Henrietta Ruth Zezula. They have three children.
