In 1986, Dongho was given a Master of Arts degree in Mathematics from Syracuse University. Also in 1989, he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Applied Mathematics from Princeton University.
Chae began his career as a postdoctoral fellow at Indiana University Bloomington in 1989. A year later he took a position of a research assistant professor at Brown University. In 1991, Dongho became an assistant professor at Pohang University of Science and Technology. He served as a professor at Seoul National University from 1994 to 2004.
In 2004, Chae was appointed a professor at Sungkyunkwan University. Since 2011 he has been a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Chung-Ang University.
Chae is known for his publications, including "On the vanishing theorems for the discretely self-similar solutions to the Hall equations", "Unique continuation type theorem for the self-similar Euler equations", "Remarks on the Liouville type problem in the stationary 3D Navier-Stokes equations" and others.
Chae is a member of Korean Academy of Sciences and Technology.
On July 17, 1984 Dongho Chae married Eunhee Nam. They have two children.
