Richard Johnston studied at the University of British Columbia and graduated as a Bachelor of Arts (with honors) in 1970. He continued education at Stanford University. Johnston became a Master of Arts in 1972. After finishing his master's degree, Johnston stayed at Stanford University and graduated as a Doctor of Philosophy in 1976.
Richard Johnston holds the Canada Research Chair in Public Opinion, Elections, and Representation. He also affiliated with the Institute for European Studies. He has taught at the University of Toronto, the California Institute of Technology, Harvard University (Mackenzie King chair, 1994-1995), and the University of Pennsylvania. He has held visiting fellowships at Queen’s University at Kingston, the Mannheimer Zentrum für Europäische Sozialforschung (MZES), and the Australian National University. From 2009 to 2012, he was a Marie Curie Research Fellow attached to the European University Institute.
Johnston's research falls into three major areas: electoral systems, party systems, and parties; communications media and campaigns and social capital, diversity and the welfare state.
Professor Richard Johnston has been named the winner of the Mildred A. Schwartz Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Politics Section of American Political Science Association (APSA). The Mildred A. Schwartz Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes scholarship and leadership in bringing the study of Canadian Politics to the international political science community.
