Donna Caffey began he career as a teacher of first grade in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, in 1977. A year later she moved to Lebanon, Missouri, where she worked as a teacher of first and third grades until 1981. In 1987, she took a position of director at Bullfrogs and Little Fishes Preschool, Lebanon.
Donna also served a four-year term on the Scholastic Book Company's teacher advisory board. She stressed the need for books dealing with tough topics. One such topic that continually surfaced in the classroom year after year was the problem of head lice. Besides the typical drugstore pamphlet, there was not a children’s book available to address lice that would assist families, schools, and other institutions. That unmet need motivated her to write Yikes - Lice! The book was also published in Spanish.
Caffey is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.
Donna married Richard Caffey, a boat manufacturer, on June 1, 1974. They have two children: Clint and Ashley.
