Partners to History: Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph David Abernathy, and the Civil Rights Movement
(Ralph David Abernathy and Martin Luther King Jr. were ins...)
Ralph David Abernathy and Martin Luther King Jr. were inseparable and together helped to establish what would become the modern American Civil Rights Movement. They preached, marched, and were frequently jailed together. Donzaleigh Abernathy, Ralph’s youngest daughter, has written Partners to History as a testament to the courage, strength, and endurance of these men who stirred a nation with their moral fortitude. She also pays tribute to the thousands of unsung heroes - the other partners to this history - who were foot soldiers in the endless struggle for freedom, justice, and equality. This document captures in words and pictures how the dream of two visionaries changed the course of American history and inspired the world. Partners to History is a unique look at a troubling time, and its usage of dramatic - and personal - photographs, combined with the voices of King and Abernathy, seamlessly conveys the fears, frustrations, and pain of the long days and nights spent planning the many crusades.

Religion
As a young child, Donzaleigh knew she wanted to be baptized but was told she was too young. At the age of 11, Donzaleigh demonstrated her own growing faith and her earliest mission call of giving hope to others. A ruptured appendix brought her close to death. Though she knew she was going to be fine, her family was afraid she would die. Eventually, she recovered and gave hope and encouragement to another critically injured girl in the same hospital ward.
Whatever her endeavor, Donzaleigh tries to follow the example of faith in God she learned from her father.
Views
As the daughter of the Civil Rights movement co-founder, Donzaleigh spent her formative years attending major civil rights marches and rallies. As a child, Donzaleigh participated in the March on Washington, the Freedom Riders, The Chicago Housing Demonstrations, and the Selma to Montgomery March for the Right to Vote.
Donzaleigh has a revolutionary heart like her parents, which motivates activists to speak for the weak people and fight for them to bring justice in society.
Abernathy started to work on different projects related to social services after the death of her father. She began to provide help to the people who were suffering from HIV Aids.
Donzaleigh got inspired to help more people who were in pain from her first project. After that, she went to the chaos-filled Los Angeles, where she assisted in cleaning the mess and providing food for the people.
Personality
As far back as Donzaleigh can remember, her father had greatly impacted her life. One of her earliest memories was her father buying hamburgers for her sister and her. The family was driving on Alabama Highway 80 one evening, and the girls asked for hamburgers. Ralph David Abernathy refused and wouldn't stop. After the girls pestered him more, he relented, stopped, and got them hamburgers. When he returned and gave them the hamburgers, he told them he would never do that again. Later, when Donzaleigh was older, she learned that her father risked his life getting the hamburgers because restaurants were not allowed to serve blacks. She learned he had to sneak around to the back of the restaurant where another black man served him. Ralph David taught God's love and forgiveness, as well as the importance of serving others, by example. During the turbulent struggle for racial equality, Donzaleigh and her family felt safe as long as her father was there.
Connections
Abernathy is married to Dar Dixon Bijarchi. Dar is an Iranian-American actor and producer.
