We open the book to an urban-pastoral scene - a young couple sitting in a diner, enjoying breakfast together, reading the newspaper and looking for an apartment. One can almost hear the bacon and eggs sizzle. But slowly, we find that this unassuming couple is anything but ordinary. They are cold-blooded killers looking for their next victim. For years the script had always been the same. Act One: find a wealthy old woman in need of companionship. Act Two: have lovely, sympathetic Gretchen insinuate herself into the lonely dowager's personal life and financial affairs. It looked as if the two killers were in for a long and successful run. But then Jay decided to improvise a little. And suddenly the murderous duo was about to find themselves cast in roles they had never rehearsed--as the victims...

Hardcover - FIRST EDITION - 1970. Publisher: Doubleday & Company. Condition: Rust boards are square, spine and binding are tight, interior is clean, unmarked. DJ is in good condition, unclipped, but has some edge wear and is lightly soiled/foxed particularly on the back cover. The top text block has foxing, else very good. Henry liked to think of it as a gentleman's agreement. They provide him with a tidy nest egg; in return the world need never know about the deed. The deed that only Henry had been clever enough to find. After all, $250,000 was a drop in the bucket to a rich corporation. Especially compared to the millions they would lose when their land reverted to a certain Miss Bessie Lewis. If the deed ever came to light. Oh yes, Henry had been very clever. Too clever for his own good. For unfortunately he was not dealing with gentlemen. And for an old lady, Miss Bessie Lewis had some surprising tricks up her sleeve...

She wrote 49 novels. Many of them were best sellers, and several were made into feature films or television movies. She died in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
