Friedman was selected in the eleventh round of the 1991 National Hockey League Entry Draft, 222nd overall, by the Quebec Nordiques. Friedman played four years with Boston University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association before beginning his professional career with the Cornwall Aces of the AHL. Friedman had two brief National Hockey League stints, in the 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 with the Edmonton Oilers and Nashville Predators, primarily as an enforcer. He was the only player taken from Edmonton in the 1998 National Hockey League Expansion Draft.
He finished his career with the Worcester IceCats of the AHL in 2001.
Doug Friedman played B-1 men"s league in Maine for FIC Hab Haters. The league is made up of former Pro hockey players (National Hockey League, AHL, ECHL) former college D1 and D3 players and Junior players.
He played at Greater Portland Industrial Hockey League. Doug has three children.
