Douglas Warren was born on January 28, 1935, in Oberlin, Ohio, United States.
Douglas Warren attended Kent State University.
After the university, Douglas Warren worked at a Houston, Texas television station during the early 1960s. He then worked as a Sunday magazine writer for the Akron Beacon Journal and the Albany Times Union. Joining United Press International in 1967, he became a held reporter in Vietnam during the war, later becoming Saigon bureau chief for Multimedia-Asia, Inc. Returning to the United States, Warren went back to his work as a Sunday magazine writer, this time for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, until 1973, when he became a full-time freelancer.
Douglas Warren, who was interested in acting and was, for a time, an actor himself in New York, was also employed as a photographer for the Hollywood publications Silver Screen and Screenland. His fascination with actors led him to write the biography Betty Grable: The Reluctant Movie Queen (1981), and the authorized autobiographies James Cagney (1983) and Yvonne (1987), about Yvonne De Carlo. He was also the author of the books Walking Tall (1974), Demonic Possession (1975), and A Case of Rape (1975).
