Soon after he left college started on extensive and varied travels was the first man to steam across Europe through the rivers and canals from Rotterdam to the Black Sea in a specially constructed steam yacht. Also spent a considerable time exploring the remoter islands of the South Seas, and wrote an account of his travels. Of late years has devoted himself to politics.
Also much interested in Local Government in his county, being a member of the West Sussex County Licensing Committee, and also a chairman and member of other local councils,— which, together with the management of his estate, occupies most of his time. Member of Parliament (Unionist), Isle of Wight, since 1910; Justice of the Peace Sussex, High Sheriff, Sussex, 1907; Patron of the livings and Lord of the Manors of Barlavington, Burton, and Crouch.
