Life has gotten tougher for 13-year-old Evan Green. A growth spurt and muscular development has transformed his former best friend Jay into the eighth-grade jock-of-all-jocks, while Ev is still short and scrawny. To make matters worse, Jay has the affections of drop-dead gorgeous Debbie. The only one left of the "Fearsome Foursome" of younger days who still values Ev’s company is freckled, bespectacled Dawn. The only way Ev believes he can gain respect—and Debbie’s heart is to beat lightning-fast Jay in the big race next June. Training for the race takes Ev into the New England woods, where he meets an old basketball-loving Native American who calls himself Grandfather. The aged Indian’s wisdom coincides with Ev’s classroom assignment concerning peace among the world’s nations. Ev discovers he has much to learn, including that winning can sometimes be losing, and that empathetic cooperation, rather than ego-driven competition, is the way to truly succeed in a more important race—the human one!
