Background

Doutzen Kroes was born on January 23, 1985, in Eastermar, Friesland, Netherlands. She is the daughter of Geartsje Leistra and Johan Kroes. Doutzen's mother served as a nurse and later as a teacher, while her father worked as a psychotherapist. Also, in the 1970s, Geartsje Leistra and Johan Kroes were both champion speed skaters.

Doutzen has a younger sister, Rens.

Education

In her early years, Kroes wanted to become a professional speed skater like her parents. Living in the countryside, Kroes was always outdoors. She even biked 15 miles to school and back every day.

Although dressed in hints of bright pink, growing up Kroes considered herself more of a tomboy and never seriously considered modeling.

Kroes took acting classes in New York City.

Career

It was in 2003, that Kroes, after finishing high school, began her modeling career, signing to Amsterdam-based modeling agency Paparazzi. Soon, she was sent to New York, where she was cast by lingerie giant, Victoria's Secret. She began appearing in lookbooks and on the catwalk for the lingerie label every year since. In 2008, Kroes was made Victoria's Secret Angel and remained such until 2014. It was also in 2008, that Doutzen appeared in her first campaign alongside fellow Angel Adriana Lima.

In 2005, Kroes was selected as Model of the Year by US Vogue readers and was subsequently featured on the cover of the May 2007 issue of the magazine, alongside models, including Hilary Rhoda, Caroline Trentini, Raquel Zimmermann, Sasha Pivovarova, Agyness Deyn, Coco Rocha, Jessica Stam, Chanel Iman, and Lily Donaldson, as the new crop of "supermodels."

In her first few seasons as a model, Kroes also appeared in campaigns for luxury labels, including Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger, Escada, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Versace, Hugo Boss, Guerlain, Bottega Veneta, De Beers, GAP, Gianfranco Ferre, and Neiman Marcus.

In 2008, Kroes, together with other models, appeared in Pirelli Calendar. From November 2009 to July 2010, the model wrote a monthly column about her life for the Dutch edition of Marie Claire.

During her career, Doutzen has also appeared on the catwalk for various design houses from Bottega Veneta, Christian Dior, Christian Lacroix, Dolce & Gabbana, Dsquared and Fendi, to Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Roberto Cavalli, Prada, Valentino, and Versace. In 2010, she modeled for Prada during a fashion week, alongside fellow Angels Alessandra Ambrosio and Miranda Kerr.

It was in September 2013, that Doutzen appeared on the cover of four international editions of Vogue, becoming the first model in history to do so in one month. The following year, the model was featured in the new Calvin Klein Reveal Fragrance commercial together with Charlie Hunnam, as well as continuing her long-standing contracts. Two years later, in 2016, Doutzen was made the spokesmodel for Dutch lingerie retailer Hunkemöller. In addition, she created her own collection line 'Doutzen's Stories.'

Besides being a notable model, Kroes has also appeared in several movies, including Nova Zembla (2011), Wonder Woman (2017), Justice League (2017), Wonder Woman 1984 (2020). In one of her interviews, Kroes revealed her desire to appear in more movies.

Since 2006, she has been a brand ambassador for L'Oréal Paris.

Kroes is known for her philanthropy. She gives her support to Dance4Life, an international youth initiative, the aim of which is to raise awareness and promote the prevention of HIV/AIDS. In addition, Doutzen is an ambassador for "Praat mar Frysk" ("Just speak Frisian") campaign and is also a supporter of Wildlife Conservation and World Wildlife Fund.

Kroes believes, that girls should be taught they can be presidents and it's not about beauty all the time.
