McGrath acquired a professional education at the Polytechnic Institute and continued his studies at Columbia University.
In 1893, shortly after leaving college, he entered the Brooklyn office of J. B. Snook & Sons where he was em¬ployed as Assistant Engineer and later Chief Engineer of the Construction Department.
Early in the present century (c.1903) Mr. McGrath began architectural practice in New York, and continued active during his remaining years. Among his most important public works planned in association with partners should be mentioned the Liberty School at Englewood, N. J.; St. John's Catholic Church at Kings Bridge, N. Y. and in 1919 the Public Library at Kearney, N.J. Independently he was well known in the field of residential design.
Elected to the A. I. A. in 1908, he was an active member of the Brooklyn Chapter for many vears, and Secretary from 1911 to 1913. During the latter year he was transferred to the New York Chapter, and as a member of the Joint Committee on City Departments, rendered valuable service in the effort to secure a better Building Code for New York.
