During his life, Rusk briefly taught an Animal Husbandry course and served as a farm loan agent. He also was the farm service director of two Chicago radio stations in the early part of the 20th century, a railroad agricultural agent, and supervising salesman and farm service director for a rock phosphate company for 14 years. In his spare time, Rusk raised hogs and cattle on a farm in the Missouri Ozarks before retiring in California.
Rusk graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, where he was also a founding member of FarmHouse fraternity in 1905.
