He taught high school in Dubois, White, and Decautur Counties between 1931 and 1938. He served as a high school principal in Jackson County in 1939 and 1940. In 1940, he defeated incumbent Eugene B. Crowe to serve as a Republican Representative for Indiana"s 9th congressional district.
He served in the United States Congress until 1958, when he was defeated by Earl Hogan for reelection.
In 1960, he defeated Hogan and retook his Congressional seat, which he held until he was defeated in 1964 by Lee H. Hamilton. After his defeat from Congress, Wilson served as an Indiana State Senator between 1969 and 1976.
He was a resident of Bedford, Indiana, where he lived until his death in 1990.
