Edayoshi Shinyo was born in 1822 in Hizen Province (Saga Prefecture), he was a retainer of the Saga Clan. His given name was Tsunetane.
He studied at the Shoheiko, the Shogunate college, in Edo.
Returning home, he was appointed by his lord instructor of classical literature for young retainers. A pro-imperial since when young, he caused a small shrine to be built in the precinct of the Hachimari Shrine in Saga as a tribute to two pro-imperial warriors, Masashige Kusunoki and his son, Masatsura. When Commodore Perry’s fleet arrived in Japan in 1853, he sent his younger brother, Taneomi Soejima to Kyoto, on a mission of conferring with Shigetomi Ohara on plans to overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate. The results of the conference were to be reported to Prince Shoren-in. The plan, however, failed as Taneomi was put under house arrest.
