He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1863 (M A, 1864), then taught in Canada in 1863-1867, and for a short time was professor of mathematics at Northwestern University.
Taught in Canada, 1863-1867. Afterward acting professor mathematics, Northwestern University. Later assistant astronomer United States Naval Observatory, Washington, and professor mathematics United States Navy, June 11, 1878.
Present relative rank of commander.
Retired, May 22, 1899. Observed for Government several eclipses and made noteworthy computation of orbit of comet of 1882.
