Wertheim received a Bachelor of Physical Education degree from Young Men’s Christian Association College in 1917. A year later he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University. Also in 1919 Edgar was given a Master of Science degree from the University of Kansas. In 1921, he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Chicago.
Wertheim began his career as an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Kansas in 1918 and held it for two years. In 1928, he took a position of a professor of organic chemistry at the University of Arkansas, where he worked until 1954. Since 1951 Edgar was a professor emeritus at the same university. Also he was a head of the department at the University of Arkansas from 1945 to 1954.
