Edmund Gerard received a Bachelor of Arts in 1929 from Lette Institute of Photography in Berlin. His mentor was cinematographer Karl Freund.
Since 1950 Edmund Gerard has been self-employed as a freelance cinematographer. Previously, he worked as a staff photographer for Life magazine (1944-1950) after working under an exclusive contract with Life as a photographer (1939-1944). In 1944 Edmund Gerard was assigned by the United States government as motion picture photo-director of overseas operations. In 1938 he worked for Life through the Black Star Picture Agency. In Cairo, Egypt, Edmund Gerard worked for both The New York Times as a staff photoreporter and for Fox Movietone news as a freelance cameraman (1937).
